Buffalo Ornithological Society

The Buffalo Ornithological Society, Inc. (BOS) was established in 1929 to promote the study of the birds of the Niagara Frontier Region, which includes western New York and nearby Ontario, Canada. This region is rich in bird life with over 380 species and 25 recognizable subspecies of birds recorded. The Society is affiliated with the Buffalo Museum of Science and is also a member organization of the New York State Ornithological Association.

Society activities have included intensive long-term counts, involvement in local conservation efforts, checklist and date guide development, and various research activities. Annual grants are awarded by the BOS to fund member sponsored research projects. A less serious activity, the former annual and now occasional (depending on membership demand) Birdathon, pits teams of club members against each other in a race for the highest species count in a four hour period during a specific time (e.g. spring migration, fall migration, dead of winter).
